TinyUmbrella Receives Another Update, Now Lets You Save Local SHSH Blobs

This means that even if you’re on iOS 8.1.2, which Apple isn’t signing anymore, you can still save the SHSH blobs for iOS 8.1.2. Oh yes, you’re going to have to be on a jailbreakable firmware, so this tool will not work for iOS 8.1.3 as of now.
Sephamore, developer of TU, also mentioned that the ability to save local SHSH blobs currently only supports A7 and A8 devices. You’ll also need to have AFC2 installed on your iOS device.
A7 devices include:
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Mini 2 (Retina)
  • iPad Mini 3
A8 devices include:
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPad Air 2
You can download the latest version of TinyUmbrella Beta from our Downloads section and save your local SHSH blobs. To do that, connect your iOS device, right click on your device on TinyUmbrella, and click on Fetch SHSH on device.
So go on and save your iOS 8.1.2 SHSH blobs now, maybe the ability to downgrade back to iOS 8.1.2 will be possible soon.

Samsung recently launched its new Galaxy Tab A lineup without fanfare in Russia. Two devices in the lineup have been announced, and both feature a metallic design.

In addition to the metallic design (with blue and gold variants to follow), these two Samsung Galaxy Tab A devices both feature an XGA display with 4:3 aspect ratio, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of internal storage. They differ mainly in size: one is an 8-inch slate with 4200mAh battery, and the other is a 9.7-inch tablet with a 6000mAh battery. The larger variant also comes with dual loudspeakers, whereas its smaller counterpart only has one.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A Specs

Samsung releases 128GB flash storage module based on 3-bit NAND eMMC 5.0

Samsung releases 128GB flash storage module based on 3-bit NAND eMMC 5.0

What with fewer innovations left to be achieved in the processor and display departments, manufacturers are now looking for other means to keep the upper hand in the mobile market. Samsung, for one, has unveiled its 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 storage solution that can pave the way for affordable smartphones and tablets with 128GB internal storage

Note that this storage solution is based on an older technology; high-end devices are already taking advantage of more recent standards, such as Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 or eMMC 5.1. Nonetheless, Samsung managed to come up with the same level of performance for its new 128GB flash storage module. For one, sequential data reading can reach up to 260MB/s, whereas random data read and write operations can reach up to 6000 input/output operations per second. These numbers are four and 10 times as fast as conventional external memory cards.

No devices have been mentioned that will boast this new flash storage module. But if all goes well, expect some new mid-range smartphone with 128GB internal storage sometime this year.

Microsoft offers Windows 10 as free upgrade, even to pirates

Microsoft offers Windows 10 as free upgrade, even to pirates

Microsoft is feeling generous with its Windows 10; it will be offering this upcoming operating system as a free upgrade to every user of Windows 7 or later. Even pirated copies of Windows are eligible for an upgrade too.

The reason for this is the rampant piracy in China, although the Philippines has its fair share of users that aren’t using genuine Windows too. Microsoft is doing this in its effort to “re-engage” the millions of users back to its ecosystem. This should also encourage stalwarts of Windows XP to switch to a more modern version and help them get the best security features they need. The company will certainly lose revenue in the process, but it will make up for it through its Office productivity suite, Skype and other online services.

Microsoft previously announced that Windows 7 and 8 users would receive the new OS for free, but it hadn’t mentioned about non-genuine users at the time.

Aside from resolving piracy issues, Microsoft has also confirmed that Windows 10 will launch this summer, with 190 countries and 111 languages to be covered in the initial launch.

Cisco IP Phones Vulnerable To Remote Eavesdropping

hacking-cisco-ip-phones
A critical vulnerability in the firmware of Cisco small business phones lets an unauthenticated attacker to remotely eavesdrop on private conversation and make phone calls from vulnerable devices without needing to authenticate, Cisco warned.
LISTEN AND MAKE PHONE CALLS REMOTELY
The vulnerability (CVE-2015-0670) actually resides in the default configuration of certain Cisco IP phones is due to "improper authentication", which allows hackers to remotely eavesdrop on the affected devices by sending specially crafted XML request.

Moreover, the vulnerability could be exploited by hackers to make phone calls remotely from the vulnerable phones as well as to carry out other attacks by making use of the information gathered through the audio interception activity.
AFFECTED DEVICES
The devices affects the Cisco's small business SPA300 and SPA500 Internet Protocol (IP) phones running firmware version 7.5.5, however, Cisco alerts that later versions of these device may also be affected by the flaw.
It’s likely that some phones have been configured to be accessible from the Internet, so it would be very easy for hackers to locate the vulnerable devices that run on vulnerable software versions by using the popular Shodan search engine.
"To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker may need access to trusted, internal networks behind a firewall to send crafted XML requests to the targeted device," the Cisco advisory says. "This access requirement may reduce the likelihood of a successful exploit."
Cisco has confirmed the issue, which was discovered and reported by Chris Watts, a researcher at Tech Analysis in Australia, along with two other flaws -- an XSS vulnerability (CVE-2014-3313) and a local code execution vulnerability (CVE-2014-3312).
VULNERABILITY UNPATCHED, YET SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
The company hasn’t patched the problem yet and is working on a new version of the firmware to fix the issue, although the company offers some recommendations in order to mitigate the risk:
  • Administrators are advised to enable XML execution authentication in the configuration setting of the affected device.
  • Administrators are advised to allow network access only to trusted users.
  • Administrators are advised to use Solid firewall strategies to help protect the affected systems from external attacks.
  • Administrators may also use IP-based access control lists (ACLs) to allow only trusted systems to access the affected systems.
  • Administrators are advised to closely monitor the vulnerable devices

Hacking Air-Gapped Computers Using Heat

hacking-hotel-wifi
There is no end to users problem when it comes to security. Everything is easily hackable — from home wireless routers to the large web servers that leak users' personal data into the world in one shot.
If you love to travel and move hotels to hotels, then you might be dependent on free Wi-Fi network to access the Internet. However, next time you need to be extra cautious before connecting to Hotel's Wi-Fi network, as it may expose you to hackers.
Security researchers have unearthed a critical flaw in routers that many hotel chains depend on for distributing Wi-Fi networks.
The security vulnerability could allow a hacker to infect guests with malware, steal or monitor personal data sent over the network, and even gain access to the hotel’s keycard systems and reservation.
HACKING GUEST WIFI ROUTER
Several models of InnGate routers manufactured by ANTlabs, a Singapore firm, have a security weakness in the authentication mechanism of the firmware.
The security vulnerability (CVE-2015-0932), discovered by the security firm Cylance, gives hackers direct access to the root file system of ANTlabs's InnGate devices.
With root access, hackers could be able to read or write any files from or to the devices’ file system respectively, including data that could be used to infect the devices of Wi-Fi users.
Researchers have found nearly 277 hotels, convention centers, and data centers across 29 countries that are affected by this security vulnerability. Although, the number could be much larger as the flaw has potential to impact Millions of users who gets on the hotel’s network for free Wi-Fi access.
However, the security researchers found more than 100 vulnerable devices located in the United States, 35 devices in Singapore, 16 in the UK, and 11 in the United Arab Emirates.
Justin W. Clarke, a senior security researcher of the Cylance SPEAR (Sophisticated Penetration Exploitation and Research) team, says the vulnerability also gives the attacker access to a computer owned by the operating organization.
THE VULNERABILITY GETS WORSE
In some cases, researchers found the InnGate devices were configured to communicate with a Property Management Systems (PMS). This could also be leveraged to gain deeper access into a hotel's business network, allowing a hacker to identify guests and upcoming guests at a hotel and their room number.
Moreover, PMS is often integrated with the phone system, POS (point-of-sale) system for processing credit card transactions, as well as electronic keycard system for accessing doors to guest rooms at hotels.
So, this vulnerability could also potentially allow an attacker to access and exploit these hotel's systems.
"In cases where an (ANTlabs) InnGate device stores credentials to the PMS, an attacker could potentially gain full access to the PMS (Property Management Systems) itself," the researchers wrote in a blog post published Thursday.
HOW THE VULNERABILITY WORKS?
The flaw lies in an unauthenticated Rsync daemon running on TCP 873 used by the ANTlabs devices. The Rsync daemon is an extraordinarily versatile file copying tool widely used to backup file systems as it can automatically copy files from one location to another.
The Rsync daemon can be password-protected, but the ANTlabs device that uses it requires no authentication.
Once hackers have connected to the Rsync daemon, they are then able to read and/or write to the file system of the Linux-based operating system without any restrictions.
Due the widespread nature of the vulnerability, ANTlabs has rolled out a patch addressing CVE-2015-0932 with an alert about the critical flaw being issued by US-CERT.
This isn't first time when researchers have discovered this kind of attack targeting guests at Hotels, late last year Kaspersky Labs uncovered a hacking campaign, dubbed DarkHotel, targeting guests at five-star hotels in Asia and the US by subverting their Wi-Fi system

Simplest Way to Check If Your Emails Are Being Tracked

Simplest Way to Check If Your Emails Are Being Tracked
You might be not aware of the companies that know pretty much everything related to your email activities like when you’ve opened email sent by one of their clients, where you are located, what device you’re using, what link you click, all without your consent, even if you haven’t click any link provided in that email.
Companies like Yesware, Bananatag, and Streak track emails, usually by adding small pixels or images to those emails which inform the companies that when and where their emails have been opened by the recipients.
If you find this something different then let you know that this sort of email tracking is very common practice adopted by many companies. However, in order to detect these tracking emails, now you have a simple but effective tool.

UGLY EMAIL -- DETECT EMAIL TRACKERS
Dubbed "Ugly Email", a new Chrome extension warns you when an email you receive in your Gmail inbox have the ability to track you, and it even works before opening the email.
Installing Ugly Email is very simple and easy. Once installed, you'll see a tiny little eye symbol next to any email that include tracking pixels from one of the three companies that include Bananatag, Streak, or Yeswear. Here's what it looks .
Sonny Tulyaganov, Ugly Mail’s creator, also confirmed that "Ugly Mail also doesn’t store, save, or transmit any data from your Gmail account or computer; everything takes place on the user’s end," Brian Barrett of Wired wrote.
HOW TO INSTALL
  1. In order to install Ugly Email service, you just need to:
  2. Go to Ugly Email on the Chrome Web Store
  3. Click the "Add to Chrome" button, and you're all set!
Now, you can sit back and relax because Ugly Email will assured you that which emails arriving in your Gmail inbox are tracking you.
FEW LIMITATIONS
However, there are some limitations with Ugly Email at this time. Firstly, Ugly Email is currently built for Gmail only, so outlookers can’t get advantage of the service.
Secondly, Ugly Email works only on Google’s Chrome browser, so you need to make sure that you’re using Google Chrome as your web browser while using the service. Although Tulyaganov says that Firefox and Safari versions are in the works.
Lastly, Ugly Email is currently effective against only three pixel-tracking providers -- Yesware, Bananatag, and Streak, although it will continue to add more tracking services to its list. At this time, it isn’t clear how long that might take

Android Wear App for iPhone and iPad compatibility may Launch Soon

android-wear-app-ios-iphone
As you may be aware, you need an Android smartphone to use an Android Wear smartwatch, but if you carry an Apple iPhone or iPad, you’ll soon be able to use the same Android Wear smartwatch, without relying on unofficial third-party app support.

Google is reportedly going to release its a new iOS app over to the App Store that will allow iPhone and iPad users to pair Android Wear devices such as Moto 360 and LG G Watch with their Apple products, French outlet 01net claimed.

Android Wear App for iPhone and iPad compatibility may Launch Soon

OFFICIAL ANDROID WEAR APP FOR iOS
Google’s new move to go cross-platform with an iOS app would expand support for the wearable platform beyond Android devices and target the potential market of tens of Millions of Apple users that may not be interested in purchasing an Apple Watch. As well as, with lower prices and strong design, a fair amount of Android Wear smartwatch demand would likely be there.

The search engine giant is possibly planning to launch the Android Wear app for iOS at Google’s annual developer conference in late May 2015, although the company may push the agenda depending upon the sales of the Apple Watch, which will be launched in the coming weeks.

UNOFFICIAL iOS APP SUPPORTS ANDROID WEAR
Recently, iOS app developer Ali Almahdi have also made an app that connects iOS to Android Wear device, same what Google is planning to officially launch.

In a video submitted to The Hacker News, Almahdi demonstrated the hack on how custom developed iOS app allows his Moto 360 Android Wear smartwatch to sync directly with his iPhone device, without having Jailbreak or root access.

GOOGLE TO CLUB WITH APPLE?
Right now, I can’t say if Google really be able to convince Apple into approving an Android Wear app for iOS as well as Apple users into using it, but if this happens, it would be highly profitable for both Google and its Android partners.

However, much details aren't available yet. But, it would definitely require additional efforts, as it wouldn't be an Android-to-Android connection any more, rather it’s an Android-to-iOS connection.

In case, Apple denied approving the Google’s proposal, the search engine giant could partner-up with Microsoft to widespread its Android wearable market. Another Gadget report suggests that Microsoft’s upcoming rumored smartwatch might be compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

Android 5.1 factory image for the Nexus Player

We talk a lot about Android 5.1 for phones and tablets, but what about Google’s first Android TV product? Looks like the Nexus Player is finally set to get it as the company has posted the factory image over at their website.

We aren’t sure if there are any big changes specific to TV, but we’ll certainly be looking to load this up onto our unit and check. In the meantime you can grab the factory image and flash the file through fastboot if you aren’t interested in waiting for a network OTA process.

You’ll be on version LMY47D and it figures to cost you little more than 442MB of bandwidth. Grab it from Google’s site right here to load it up and give it a go.

Google in talks with LG to build this year’s Nexus smartphone, not Huawei

Nexus 5 back 1
Details about how the Nexus 6 was conceived is still shrouded in mystery. With rumors last year that Google would effectively be killing off the Nexus line in favor of multiple high-end devices — all running stock Android — sold in carrier stores, Google seemingly made a U-turn. This was after the Android Silver project head made his sudden departure from the company altogether.
Now, as we look ahead to the next Nexus, early rumors began swirling that Chinese smartphone maker Huawei would take up the mantle, something we’ll admit we never saw coming. But before you got your hopes up (or down), a new report has emerged, suggesting that it could be none other than LG.
Apparently, Google engineers were spotted visiting LG headquarters in South Korea, where they took a tour of a few LG facilities responsible for building LG’s displays, OIS cameras, wireless charging parts, as well as LG’s own R&D facilities. Carrying the codename “N000,” (those are zeroes, by the way, not the letter “o”) the device — said to be a smartphone — could launch as the “ Nexus 7.” Um… what?
Going by Google’s current naming convention, the number following a Nexus name has always denoted screen size — not generation. It’d be odd if Google suddenly switched gears confusing consumers in the process. So, that either means Google is looking to LG for a 7-inch tablet followup, or they’re launching a 7-inch smartphone (or not using the 7 name at all). If LG is making another tablet (and not a smartphone), then it’s still entirely possible for Huawei could be working on the actual smartphone. Confused yet? So are we.
As you can already tell, we’re getting a little bit ahead of ourselves here. In any case, LG is a major Android partner and has released quite a few Nexus devices to date, even more if you count their Google Play tablet. If rumors of an LG-made Nexus 2015 smartphone are true, would you guys be disappointed or overjoyed?

Omg, HTC confirms the One M7 will not be upgraded to Android 5.1

The One M7 probably won’t get another big Android update. Photo: Killian Bell/Cult of Android

HTC confirms the One M7 will not be upgraded to Android 5.1

Just like last year’s One M8, the One M7 got an Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade earlier this year — but it seems that’s the last big update it will get. HTC has confirmed that while the Google Play Edition One M7 will get Android 5.1, the regular model will not.

“Only the GPE version of M7 will receive 5.1,” tweeted HTC Product Manager Mo Versi when asked when the One M7 would get Google’s latest Android 5.1 software. “Our target is early April.”

Unlike the regular One, the Google Play Edition handset runs pure Android — without the Sense user interface and other HTC tweaks. Making the latest Android releases available to it takes very little work, then.

But the regular One M7 does have Sense and all of the additional features that come with it, and HTC has seemingly decided that after two years, it will no longer be making the latest Android updates compatible with this device.

The two-year cutoff for Android updates is pretty typical of major manufacturers these days, so it’s not too surprising. But it will still be somewhat disappointing to those still clinging onto the original One smartphone.

At least HTC did update the device to Lollipop before closing the door on it, and of course, it should still see plenty of support from the community for years to come. You’ll be able to get an Android 5.1 update if you don’t mind flashing third-party ROMs, then.

Android 5.1 update on your Nexus device, how Google manages updates

Android 5.1 update on your Nexus device, how Google manages updates

Waiting for the Android 5.1 update on your Nexus device? You’re not alone, here’s how Google manages updates
If you keep hitting “check for updates” on your Nexus device, you are just wasting your time, and stressing your fingers. We know, we don’t like to wait for the OTA update either.

Having your device constantly check for updates is about as effective as repeatedly hitting a floor button on an elevator – it’s not. As it happens, clearing Google Service Framework data doesn’t help either, in fact, it will actually hurt your chances of getting an update in a timely manner.

We dug through the interwebs to find some information about how Google manages Android updates, et voila, we found an explanation by Google’s own Dan Morrill, an Android Engineer, on Reddit. He shared these pearls of wisdom a little over a year ago when Android 4.4 KitKat started rolling out, but let’s rehash these things as they touch on both tactics for trying to get Android updates, and explain perfectly why they don’t work.

Taking the latter issue first, if you clear the Google Service Framework data, Google’s servers see this as factory reset, changing the primary ID for your device. Doesn’t sound like a big deal right? The problem is that it invalidates all the app tokens which, in turn, wreaks havoc over notifications. In short, you won’t brick your device, but you are not getting it to the front of the line trying to grab the newest OS update.

As for continuously “checking for updates,” it is not unlike knocking at the door when no one is home. The updates are pushed out in phases. The first phase lasts 24-48 hours, and will reach about 1% of devices initially. The engineers then examine error reports and how the devices are checking in.

If all is going well, then the second phase will push out to about 25% of the install base. Assuming there are no further problems (if any), then the following phase will reach 50%, and so-on over the next couple of weeks.

How does that translate to you the user? Well, if you hit “check for updates” during the first phase, basically you have a 1% chance of getting the update. If your device is not randomly selected to receive the “offer,” then you are on the sidelines until the next phase starts. In Morrill’s own words, “Once your device checks in and gets turned down, that’s it until the next batch. Mashing on the ‘check for updates’ button just causes yourdevice to check in again, and get automatically turned down again. Think about how that makes your device feel! WON’T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE PHONES?”

As you may expect, the next phase gives your device another shot at hitting pay dirt for the update, but again, once the device checks in, that is it for a given 24-hour period usually.

If it’s any consolation, the “offers” are random, updates are not handled on a first-come, first-served basis. While that means there is no “race” to get the update first, we kind of wish it was sometimes.

Chech this out, Screenshots leaked testing of WhatsApp Voice Calls for the Apple iPhone

Screenshots leak testing of WhatsApp Voice Calls for the Apple iPhone

Screenshots leaked testing of WhatsApp Voice Calls for the Apple iPhone

Last month, we showed you how to enable WhatsApp's calling feature on your rooted Android phone. The feature should eventually be included with the version of the messaging app available from the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, an Indian iPhone user has taken screenshots of what looks to be the WhatsApp calling feature running on his handset.

Voice calls on the iPhone version of WhatsApp requires that you have version 2.11.17.444 of the messaging app, which is in beta. It can be installed only on a jailbroken iPhone. The version of WhatsApp that currently populates the App Store is 2.11.16, which of course doesn't include the calling feature.

The screenshots show small changes to the UI and a phone icon underneath a user's profile picture. Clicking on the call button brings up a dialer similar to the one on the iPhone. A "Recent" button on the bottom of the page will show a recent history of calls made using the app.

Although we have no idea when this will all be made available for iOS users, it feels like it has been a long ride since we first alerted you to the possibility that voice calling would be added to the popular messaging app. Last week, an Italian iPhone site tested out the feature and posted a video of the test. Even if you don't speak Italian, it is worth viewing just to check out the feature in action. That video is part of our slideshow below. Feel free to check it out!

Samsung, BlackBerry and IBM team up together to produce a high security new tablet

BlackBerry, in conjunction with Samsung and IBM, has introduced a secure tablet that will launch sometime this summer. The slate will be priced in the area of $2380. Called the SecuTablet, the device is based on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. The tablet employs the Secusmart encryption technology that is now owned by BlackBerry after the latter's acquisition of Secusmart last July.

Secusmart's encryption technology is already employed by the German and Canadian government and is used to prevent people from spying on the slate. IBM's contribution is software that enables the user to securely separate work and personal apps on the same device. Hans-Christoph Quelle, Secusmart's CEO, says that anyone who knows how to use Android should be able to work the tablet.

The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet was launched in 2011 and no sequel was ever released. Shockingly, the slate came to market without an email client or a calendar, omissions that were corrected by a future software update. The device was powered by the QNX OS, which was used to build the BlackBerry 10 OS. With the hefty price tag, the SecuTablet is obviously a device for business users; this is a market that still counts on BlackBerry's focus on security.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 features a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. That works out a pixel density of  288ppi. Powering the slate is an octa-core 1.9GHz Exynos 5420 CPU. The ARM Mali-T628 MP6 GPU handles graphics. 3GB of RAM is on board along with 32GB of native storage. Those needing additional memory can turn to the 128GB capacity microSD slot. An 8MP camera is on back while a 2.1MP shooter adorns the front of the tablet. A 7900mAh battery keeps the lights on, and Android 4.4.2 is pre-installed.

Google just acknowledges leaky memory, is fix coming to Android 5.1.1 or not ?

A memory leak that was originally discovered in Android 5.0.1, is still annoying and befuddling Nexus device users with Android 5.1. According to the Issue Tracker page on the AOSP website, Google has internally fixed the issue and plans to include it in an upcoming release. That most likely would be Android 5.1.1.

The complaints are beginning to read the same. Apps, especially Google+, restart on their own. Some active apps disappear in the middle of using them, and free RAM drops in hours to about 750MB-800MB from 1.1GB-1.3GB. Most of the people who sent in a complaint appear to be using the Nexus 5, although other Nexus devices have been cited. Some complaints said that opening apps would increase the amount of RAM in use, but closing apps would not reduce that figure.

Issue 159738, "Memory leak still present on Android 5.1," was closed by Google on Friday. Now, it is just a matter of waiting for Android 5.1.1. Google will no doubt stamp this as "Rush" because no one wants to live with the craziness of a handset running with a memory leak.

Thanks for the tip Rodrigo!

lol, Apple’s digital assistant Siri have mood swings or not ?

Does Apple’s digital assistant Siri have mood swings?

Apple’s digital assistant Siri have mood swings

When it comes to Siri, Apple loves to tout its digital assistant’s personality, recently enhanced with the update to iOS 8.

Apple likes happy. Apple users like happy too. All the major players are vying to add quirky personalities to their digital assistants. Microsoft’s Cortana probably still has some of the best responses we have seen in a while, but that is not to say Google Now or Siri are not without their nuances.

One guy in Southern California was asking Siri some questions on his iPhone 6 when it seemed to him that the digital assistant was not sounding so chipper anymore. Siri doesn’t have a mood ring, and the Apple Watch is not yet available for him to buy and make “her” happy.

That’s when he got an idea, a “mind blowing” idea. He grabbed his wife’s iPhone 6 and ran a side-by-side comparison of how Siri responds to inquiries from each device’s owner. Both devices are identical and running iOS 8.2. The settings for Siri are also identical, female voice and “American English.”

It is far from a scientific test, but we have to agree, Siri sounds far more upbeat talking to its female companion than when it responds to her spouse on his iPhone. Coincidence? Who knows. Do you have a family of iPhones in the house? How does Siri respond to your family members? Let us know in the comments below.
