LG announces new mid-range K50S and K40S with large bezels, notch, and an Assistant button slug

LG just announced two new-midrange phones a couple of weeks ahead of IFA 2019. As usual with the company, it has shared limited details and will release more information in Berlin starting September 6. We already know both handsets are improved versions of the K40 and K50, which were unveiled a few months ago.

The new K40S and K50S build up on their predecessors and feature enhanced displays and cameras, as well as larger batteries. They retain some of their siblings' key selling points such as the Google Assistant button, fingerprint sensor on the back, AI camera features, DTS:X 3D Surround Sound, and MIL-STD-810G standard for durability.

Google Drive gets new handy gesture for account switching [APK Download]

Last week, Google Maps added a new gesture for quickly switching between accounts. Given how simple it is to use instead of tapping a few times, we got excited about the prospect of the gesture coming to other Google apps, especially ones where account switching is more frequently needed, like Gmail and Drive. While the former hasn't gotten it yet, the latter just did.

Google Drive v2.19.332 adds the ability to swipe up or down on your avatar picture (top right) to quickly switch accounts.

Nokia working on 'value' 5G phone set for 2020 release

Following tradition set by the first 4G and LTE phones, the initial wave of 5G smartphones has been very expensive. The Galaxy S10 5G and Note10+ 5G will set you back $1,300, but HMD Global (maker of all Nokia-branded Android devices) wants to make something substantially cheaper.

HMD Global's Juho Sarvikas confirmed to Digital Trends that the company is working on a Nokia 5G phone, which is expected to be roughly half the price of current 5G smartphones.

Beware: Using Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri to call businesses could connect you to scammers instead

Voice assistants make our lives easier for the most part. Instead of having to get up to turn on the lights, we can simply ask them to do it for us. Similarly, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa allow you to call businesses via voice, with no need to input a phone number anywhere. There are risks associated with blindly calling unknown numbers, though. According to the Better Business Bureau, some scammers have apparently gamed Google and Amazon's phone number ranking systems.

Android Studio 3.5 hits stable, bringing along better performance

After Google published a beta of Android Studio 3.5 during I/O this year, the product is now coming to developers as a stable release. However, this version doesn't bring any new features with it. Google halted regular development for eight months and focused on making the program faster and less resource-demanding, leading to a more usable IDE.

Android Studio 3.5 is the third release to come with Project Marble, which focuses on system health, feature polish, and fixes bugs in the program.

Yubico's new security key works with both USB Type-C and Lightning

Yubico makes some of the best USB security keys currently available. The company's products make it easy to add hardware-based two-factor authentication to many online accounts, but varying connectors and OS limitations make it harder to use them across platforms. Now Yubico has something closer to the best solution: the YubiKey 5Ci.

The YubiKey 5Ci has a USB Type-C plug on one end, and an Apple Lightning connector on the other.

Inside Huawei: From a European village in China to a live smartphone factory

They weren’t letting cars in anymore — we’d have to take the crowded train, get off at the next station, and make our way to the hired driver. This was the greeting I received when I stepped off my flight in Hong Kong on a Monday night, as a fourth day of protests at the city’s international airport reached a breaking point. It was a little surreal. I walked past chanting (but exceedingly polite) protestors clad in black, most of their faces concealed by gas masks or bandanas, stocked with plenty of literature about their city and their concerns about its future.

HMD announces its first post-paid device on Verizon, the $168 Nokia 3 V

A decade ago, when Nokia still made its own devices and dominated the smartphone market, one of the company's biggest weaknesses was its US presence. It struggled to enter the USA in any significant manner and that eventually helped in its downfall after Android and iOS took over the world by storm. Today, with ex-Nokians at the helm, HMD seems to have learned from that mistake and is trying hard not to repeat it.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro is a rebadged Redmi K20 Pro for the European market

Xiaomi's recent top-tier handsets have offered flagship-level specs for considerably less than the likes of Samsung and Huawei, a tactic that looks set to continue with the Mi 9T Pro. If it looks familiar to you, that would be because it's really just a Redmi K20 Pro that's been rebranded for sale in Europe.

The specs are identical and include highlights such as Qualcomm's 855 processor, a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, and a 20MP pop-up selfie camera to allow for almost non-existent bezels.

  • Google started allowing Nest users to migrate their accounts and subscriptions to Google and its own Store. Following that, IFTTT immediately issued a warning to its existing users

Messages 4.7 lets you batch-delete individual messages in chats [APK Download]

Work on the Messages app, Google's messaging platform du jour, continues. After adding RCS, Assistant, a web client, and several other enhancements, the latest Messages update isn't groundbreaking but it does bring one feature that should have been there already: multi-select for individual messages.

It was already possible to multi-select conversations in Messages, but if you opened a specific chat and selected a message, tapping any additional ones didn't do anything.

Spotify is working on Stories, because people clearly don't have enough of them

Although Spotify is not a social media network, it has a bunch of features to let users share playlists, songs, and albums amongst each other. However, it doesn't really give artists the opportunity to interact with their fans, besides sharing their biography, a few pictures, and concert dates on their page. This is about to change, as the streaming platform is reportedly introducing stories, in which performers will be able to create a stronger bond with listeners.

Amazon's Fire tablets are slow, but you can (probably) make them faster

Amazon's Fire tablets are some of the best bang-for-your-buck electronics available, but most of them compromise on performance to reach low price points. The processors aren't very powerful, there isn't much RAM or storage to work with, and many mobile apps like to go wild with background tasks.

While we're not miracle workers, we do have a few tips for ways you can speed up your Fire tablet.

Clear cache partition

The first step towards improving performance on a Fire tablet is wiping the cache partition.
