[Update: Rolling out] Razer Phone will get Android 9 Pie 'in the coming weeks'

  • The Pie update for the first Razer Phone is now rolling out to users. It weighs about 1GB and brings all the Pie goodies you expect. However, beware that

The original Razer Phone received widespread praise when it was released in late 2017, mostly thanks to its then-unique 120Hz screen. However, Razer hasn't done a great job with long-term support, as the device is still running Android Oreo with a year-old security patch.

Grab Xiaomi's Mi Home Wi-Fi security camera for just $30 ($10 off)

Xiaomi products are known to be affordable and do the job well, including its Mi Home security camera. The product was initially sold for a reasonable $40 but has just received a $10 markdown, making it quite a bargain for just $30.

The Mi Home security camera features a 1080p ultra-wide-angle 130º lens with night vision. It connects to your home network over Wi-Fi, but unlike many other smart home devices, this one can handle both 2.4 and 5GhZ radio.

The Amazon Echo Show 5 is down to $65 ($25 off)

At the end of May, Amazon introduced a new 5-inch smart display with hopes to satisfy buyers looking for a smaller device than the Show but bigger than the Spot, and also to compete with Lenovo's Smart Clock. The initial $90 price was also reasonably positioned in comparison to other smart devices, but just two months after its release, the Echo Show 5 is currently on sale for $65, which is almost 30% off.

'Blocks' modular smartwatch gets cancelled four years after Kickstarter campaign

The modular 'BLOCKS' smartwatch launched on Kickstarter all the way back in 2015, and quickly raised over $1.6 million. The goal was to make a watch that you could connect extra modules to, adding functionality like an LED flashlight and more battery capacity. However, crowdfunded projects are always a gamble, and now Blocks has officially run out of money.

The Blocks team posted a project update on Kickstarter, but since it's set to only be viewable by backers (never a good sign), all we have to go on are screenshots from backers.

Weekend poll: Would you pay $5/month for a library of paid Android games and other apps?

Late last month, Google was spotted testing a new subscription service called "Google Play Pass." In a similar vein to Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass promises access to a library of games and apps for a flat $5 monthly fee. The subscription service is in limited testing right now, but we're curious to know if you'd sign up when (or if) it expands.

It remains to be seen which games or apps will be included in the subscription if the service goes live, but screenshots and icons from current testing indicate that games like Stardew Valley, Marvel Pinball, KOTOR, Life is Strange, and Limbo are included in the current test.

If you're on the lookout for an interesting mid-range device that won't break the bank, the Moto Z3 is definitely worth considering. It features respectable internals, but its release price was too steep for it to thrill on such a competitive market. Nevertheless, now that the handset is down to just $200, it offers excellent value for money.

The Z3 Play features a Snapdragon 636 SoC, a 6-inch 2160 x 1080 OLED display, 4GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery.

One of the perks of YouTube's paid tier, YouTube Premium, is access to YouTube Originals — scripted programming more similar to traditional TV shows than most of the other content you'd find on YouTube. Review: Adonit PhotoGrip Qi is a great smartphone camera grip with built-in wireless charging

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the last decade, and for many people, they've completely replaced dedicated cameras. They're smaller and lighter, easier to travel with, and you don't have to offload the photos before doing something with them. But that doesn't mean we don't miss a few things from DSLRs or point and shoots, like a comfortable hand grip or a physical shutter button. Plenty of companies have released smartphone camera grips, but Adonit has updated its original version with a new design and packed in wireless charging so you can get more pictures without worrying about your phone dying mid-trip.

Runkeeper kills WearOS app, citing 'buggy experience'

2019 has been a sad year for WearOS, as the platform witnessed the death of several apps over the past few months. Runkeeper is the latest company to announce the retirement of its application on WearOS devices, claiming the experience was buggy for most users.

Runkeeper is following in Google's footsteps, which ended support for its Nest and Hangouts apps earlier this year. In an apologetic email sent to users, the company is explaining it's "not able to offer [the best tracking experience] on Wear OS," and has therefore preferred to remove its app from the WearOS platform as of version 9.13, which should be released in the next few weeks.

Hot topic: June smart ovens have been preheating in the middle of the night, company blames user error

You can pretty much get a smart anything these days, and while lots of connected products make sense, some can be more concerning. Smart ovens that show a live feed of your roasting turkey on your phone and can be switched off remotely certainly sound like a good idea, to begin with, but not so much when they turn themselves on in the middle of the night and heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
