Google's Wear OS platform is in a bit of a weird place. The operating system itself is still being periodically updated with new features and improvements, like the Tiles function that was released in May, but the third-party app library is still minimal, and Qualcomm has been slow to improve the underlying hardware. Still, Wear OS isn't going anywhere, and the closest thing to a flagship watch is the new fifth-generation Fossil Q lineup.

Google Drive will soon support file shortcuts

Cloud storage services like Google Drive have made collaborative work massively more convenient, and soon(ish), it'll get even better: Google will begin testing file shortcuts in Drive over the next few weeks.

Shortcuts should be familiar to Windows and Mac users (although they're "Aliases" in Mac parlance), and they're exactly what they sound like: links to files that can be moved or deleted independently from the items they point to. File sharing in the workplace seems like the most significant use case in Drive; files can't be owned by two shared drives, so there's currently no convenient way to provide two separate teams access to the same file.

Knock Knock! Happy third birthday, Google Duo

Three years ago today, Google launched Duo, the video calling app and service it teased a few months earlier during I/O 2016. Along with Allo, Duo brought about a shift in Google's messaging and communication strategy. It spelled the beginning of the end for Hangouts and the switch to a more simplistic approach that didn't pan out well for Allo. Duo, on the other hand, is still advancing. It may not have completely revolutionized video calling, like Google had hoped, but that doesn't mean it isn't a success.

Android Q to get customizable styles and clocks, but they're not live yet

Android Q is nearing a stable release, but there are still tidbits of new information surfacing. Back in July, when Google accidentally pushed an internal test build to the public, XDA Developers found hints that the latest OS version could support advanced customization options for Pixels. They should allow owners to choose clocks, styles, wallpapers, and more. In Beta 6, some users saw evidence that this could indeed end up in the final release when they got the Settings suggestion to "Customize your Pixel." Tapping it leads to the pre-installed wallpaper app for now, though.

Google Play Books website lets you opt into specific beta features, just like Gmail labs

Google has always been a fast-iterating company that welcomes feedback from customers on new features. It routinely launches betas and gives interested parties the chance to take a look at unfinished products. Just as it used to have an extensive collection of individual lab features in Gmail (called "advanced" today), the company is now giving Google Play Books users access to library features they can cherry-pick from.

At the moment, the Play Books team offers three functions for you to try out.

Google Maps adds smooth gesture to switch accounts, hopefully Gmail follows suit [APK Download]

Gestures are one of the smoothest interactions on a smartphone. Though often hidden and only discoverable inadvertently or by trial-and-error, they can save you time once you know how to use them. One of my favorite gestures so far has been the swipe to switch tabs in Chrome, but it may now be dethroned by a new swipe to switch accounts in Google Maps. Though I'll seldom use it in Maps, I'm really crossing fingers that it comes to Gmail soon.

Nest cam status lights can no longer be turned off in the name of privacy and customers are pissed

Nest security cam owners have received an email from Google on Wednesday that left many disgruntled, to put it lightly. The company is introducing a new policy that forces Nest Cam, Dropcam, and Nest Hello status lights to remain on permanently while recording and blink when users are looking at live footage – all in the name of privacy.

Customers are in uproar against the changes. In the Google Nest community forum, multiple threads were opened that complain about the permanent lights and argue that, in fact, users' privacy is reduced by them.

Samsung's PlayGalaxy Link game streaming service will launch in September

With the unveiling of the Galaxy Note10 last week, Samsung also briefly touched upon an upcoming PC-to-phone game streaming service. We've since found out that it's called Play Galaxy Link and will launch in September, just in time for it to compete with Google's Stadia when that arrives in November.

Although the site isn't online at the moment, we're hearing that Play Galaxy Link will be found at playgalaxy.com. The intriguing controller seen in the presentation comes from Glap, whose site says it was built with respect to strict guidelines from Samsung and with Steam Link also in mind.
