Apple Was World's Number One Smartphone Vendor in Q4 2019 [Report]

Apple was the world's number one smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of 2019, reports Strategy Analytics.

According to their latest research, global smartphone shipments saw 0% growth in the quarter at 375 million units. Apple reportedly captured 18.9% of market share followed by Samsung at 18.4% and Huawei at 15%. Full-year smartphone shipments totalled 1.4 billion units in 2019.

“Global smartphone shipments grew zero percent annually from 376.0 million units in Q4 2018 to 374.5 million in Q4 2019," says Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics. "Worldwide smartphone demand remains mixed for now, with sharp declines in China balanced by strong growth across India and Africa. Full-year smartphone shipments hit 1.41 billion in 2019, dipping 1 percent from 1.43 billion in 2018, due to mild inventory build in the second half of the year. Looking ahead, US trade wars and the China coronavirus scare will be among barriers to growth for smartphones in 2020.”

Apple Ordered to Pay CalTech $837.8 Million for Infringing Wi-Fi Patents

Apple and Broadcom have been ordered to pay the California Institute of Technology $1.1 billion for infringing its patents on Wi-Fi technology, reports Bloomberg. Apple must pay $837.8 million and Broadcom must pay $270.2 million.

The jury verdict is the sixth largest patent verdict of all time; however, both Apple and Broadcom plan to appeal, saying they disagree with the factual and legal basis for the verdict.

A spokesperson said CalTech is “pleased the jury found that Apple and Broadcom infringed Caltech patents” adding that the school is “committed to protecting its intellectual property in furtherance of its mission to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education.”
