Apple Doubles Down on 'Hey' App Rejection, No Rule Changes Imminent

Apple SVP Phil Schiller has doubled down on the company's rejection of the 'Hey' email app and says no App Store rule changes are imminent. This despite increasing pressure from developers and regulators who say the company is acting like a monopolist and bully.

“Sitting here today, there’s not any changes to the rules that we are considering,” Schiller said during a call with TechCrunch. “There are many things that they could do to make the app work within the rules that we have. We would love for them to do that.”

The 'Hey' email app from Basecamp requires a subscription to use. In order to circumvent giving Apple a 30% cut of its revenues, Basecamp sold subscriptions outside of the app taking care not to link them or mention them in the app. Even so, Apple says the company must offer its subscription as in-app purchase or face removal from the App Store.

Microsoft Says Antitrust Regulators Should Investigate the Apple App Store

Microsoft President Brad Smith says antitrust regulators should investigate the Apple App Store for using tactics that take advantage of developers.

Smith made the comments at an event hosted by Politico today. Although he didn't mention Apple specifically, a Microsoft spokesperson later confirmed to Bloomberg that the comments were made in reference to the Cupertino company.

Smith noted that today's app stores create a much higher barrier to fair competition than Windows did when it was found guilty of antitrust violations years ago.

Apple is Acting Like a Monopolist and Bully, Says Chairman of the House Antitrust Subcommittee

Apple is acting like a monopolist and bully says Congressman David Cicilline, Chairman of the House Antitrust Subcommittee.

Cicilline joined The Vergecast along with Basecamp CTO David Heinemeier to discuss Apple's threat to remove the company's email app 'Hey' from the App Store. Apple is demanding the subscription app implement a way to sign up for the service in-app, giving the company a 30% cut of those signups.

“Because of the market power that Apple has, it is charging exorbitant rents — highway robbery, basically — bullying people to pay 30 percent or denying access to their market,” said Rep. Cicilline. “It’s crushing small developers who simply can’t survive with those kinds of payments. If there were real competition in this marketplace, this wouldn’t happen.”
